English Language Proficiency (ELP)

About the Course

Clear communication matters most when a conversation moves beyond a familiar call or a rehearsed response. A pilot may need to explain a problem, clarify an instruction, or describe a situation for which a standard phrase is not enough.

IFA's ELP preparation helps students develop that confidence in English. Classes focus on understanding spoken information and expressing meaning clearly in an aviation context — the aim is speech that another person can follow, even when the situation becomes unfamiliar.

What the Course Covers

Preparation follows the six language areas in the ICAO rating scale:

• Pronunciation — intelligible speech, word stress and rhythm.
• Structure — grammar and sentence patterns that communicate meaning accurately.
• Vocabulary — suitable words for familiar and unexpected situations, including paraphrasing.
• Fluency — connected speech at a manageable pace.
• Comprehension — understanding spoken information and recognising when clarification is needed.
• Interaction — relevant responses, checking understanding and resolving confusion.

These are the language-assessment criteria used in the ICAO framework, rather than a technical ground-examination syllabus.

Learning at IFA

Lessons connect language work with situations a student can understand and discuss. Students learn to describe events in a clear sequence, separate important information from background detail, and explain an idea when a particular word does not come to mind.

Regular practice gives students the chance to notice recurring difficulties — someone may understand a question well but struggle to organise an answer, while another student may speak comfortably but miss a detail while listening. One-to-one mentoring helps bring attention to the area that needs work.

Assessment Format and Pattern

An aviation English assessment evaluates speaking and listening in relevant contexts. The tasks and duration depend on the recognised test provider — there is no universal MCQ paper for ELP. The target levels are:

• Level 4 — Operational
• Level 5 — Extended
• Level 6 — Expert

The recognised assessment determines the level awarded. Course completion does not itself grant a language endorsement.

What IFA Offers

Students receive regular opportunities to practise and revisit the language areas they find difficult. Mentoring helps them set a useful focus for further study before an official assessment.
